I want to share with you how to Develop a Mompreneur Mindset
Have you ever thought something like this….
“I’m not sure anyone will hire me?”
“Why would someone hire me when they could work with her?”
Or maybe this…
“Who am I to run a business?”
If you have thought any of these things this makes you….NORMAL. As an entrepreneur you will likely face self-doubt many times—especially when you’re up-leveling or trying something new in your business.
It is at times when we step out of our comfort zone, in bravery, that amazing things happen. But, these are also the times when our minds want to mess with us the most. In his book, The Big Leap, Gay Hendricks calls this having an upper limit problem. He describes upper limit problems as our brains trying to protect us and keep us comfortable. (BTW if you haven’t read this yet…it’s a must read).
However, while having these thoughts is totally typical, sitting in them and letting them guide you is detrimental to your success and will keep you stuck. So, ensuring that you have some mindset tools in your back pocket will help you kick these nasty thoughts to the curb so you can step fully into your vision and have the kind of success that you deserve.
Your 4-Step Mind Strengthening Plan
Step 1: Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings.
A lot of us like to push our feelings down. There are a ton of common coping mechanisms such as shopping, drinking, sugary goodness, Netflix, etc. These things help us shove our uncomortable feelings down, but what they also do is allow us to shut off our innate warning system.
What if we stopped thinking about our uncomfortable feelings as something bad and started thinking of them as an alert. For example, maybe you land your first full paying client and instead of being elated you start thinking that maybe you should stop while you’re ahead. Instead of shoving that thought away by watching Netflix with a bottle of red, ask yourself: “Why do I think this?”
Becoming more aware of your thought patterns and then considering the “why” behind them is going to go a long way in helping you push through some of the hard, but necessary, work of an entrepreneur.
Step 2: Journal, Journal, Journal
Here’s the thing…I used to collect journals. I’d never use them, but I loved buying them. BUT, guess what? They are actually super useful. If you’re someone who is like “I don’t have time to journal.” Or “I don’t know what to write.” I hear you. I used to be you.
Now here is my pep talk:
Just start writing anything. You can do it!
A good practice to get into is to write in your journal for a certain number of pages each day. In her book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron calls this practice Morning Pages. She suggests writing three full pages everyday even if you’re just writing that you don’t know what to write about. Fill up the pages.
As entrepreneurs we are all creatives. You must be creative to run a business. But at times our thoughts become muddled, so what journaling consistently does, is help us get our thoughts out so we can focus.
This practice has been game changing for me. Don’t skip it.
Step 3: Define Your Vision
Making sure that you have a clearly defined, long-term vision is essential to your mindset strength. When you sit down to write your vision make sure you are using present tense language and including sensory details. This will help you create a strong connection with where you want to be and will also help you define your “why”.
When things get tough you’ve got to have a solid and meaningful “why” behind your entrepreneurial endeavors or you will stop in your tracks.
Once you get your vision written read it every. single. day. Everyday.
Step 4: Visualize Your Success
What does it mean to visualize your success? It means to think very intentionally and in great detail about your goals or a tough situation you’re going to be dealing with. You will visualize what it is to go through the event from beginning to end. And to visualize the end result you want.
When you’re visualize a particular event or situation consider the following questions to help you gain full clarity over the situation:
- What are you dressed in?
- What smells/sounds are around you?
- Who are you with?
- What is your attitude?
- How do you feel?
- What is the end result?
- What steps will you take to get to the end result?
- How do you feel when it is done?
- Who will you talk about this with when it’s over?
- How will they react?
Remember: What you focus on you get more of!
Following these four steps will help you gain a mindset that is strong and resilient—something that is critical to your success as a mompreneur.
